Pet owner FAQs:

What will happen if my dog doesn’t have a microchip?

If a dog is found not to have a microchip by the age of 8 weeks then the keeper may be served a notice requiring them to get the dog microchipped and registered on a microchip database within 21 days. If this notice is ignored then the keeper could be issued a £500 fine or an enforcer could seize the dog and get it microchipped at the expense of the keeper.

What will happen if  y dog isn’t registered on a database or the details are incorrect?

If a dog is found to be registered on a microchip database with incorrect details then the keeper may be served a notice requiring them to update the registered details within 21 days. If this notice is ignored then the keeper could be issued a £500 fine.

When should a puppy be microchipped?

All puppies should be microchipped by the age of 8 weeks and BEFORE transfer from the breeder to the registered keeper. When purchasing  a puppy you must ensure that it is microchipped and registered to the breeder on a microchip database, you must then ensure the registration is transferred to you with the correct contact details.

It is not recommended to microchip a puppy prior to the age of 6 weeks.

Do all dogs have to be microchipped?

There are a couple of exemptions to the regulations:

The legislation does not apply if a veterinary surgeon certifies, on a form approved by the Secretary of State, that a dog or puppy should not be microchipped for reasons of the animal’s health. In these cases the breeder/keeper should always pass the puppy on to a new keeper with a copy of this certificate and any time limit for microchipping.

If a veterinary surgeon has certified that the dog is a working dog and docked its tail in line with the Animal Welfare Act 2006 then the time limit for the dog to be microchipped and recorded on a microchip database is extended to 12 weeks.

microchippedHow do I know if my details are correct?

To check your details on the database you will need to know the microchip number and the database your pet is resisted on. You can either check your details online or call one of the database team and ask them to check for you.

How do I change my details on the database?

In order to update your details you will need to know your pet’s microchip number and , for online amends, you will require your unique security password. Go to the ANIBASE website to mske changes.

www.anibase.com/updating_your_details

What if I don’t know the microchip number and/or microchip database it’s registered on?

If you do not have a record of your pet’s microchip, simply take them along to your vet and ask them to scan the microchip for you. Once you have the number you can use the ‘chip checker’ on the ANIBASE homepage to find out which database your pet is registered on, along with contact details to get in touch with them.
